Crisis Line Call Topic 02: Coping with loss

Published on February 19, 2020

Whenever we’re coping with loss or going through the grieving process or when our volunteers are talking to youth or families who call to talk about losing a loved one, we always try to remember to keep these tips in mind as well as recommend them to anyone we talk to:

Take Care of yourself.

It may seem far-fetched, but there is one person who can be capable of offering you comfort 24-hours a day, YOU. Taking care of yourself is key when coping with loss, this can be as extensive as eating a meal, getting in exercise, or taking a shower, to something as simple as giving yourself self-affirmations and practicing self-compassion.  Most importantly, treat yourself like a loving friend, and give yourself space and time needed to grieve and process the pain.

Talk with caring friends and family.

Being able to process your feelings and pain with caring friends and family is another way we can deal with a major loss.  One of the best things you can do when coping with loss is to connect with others. Go for a walk with trusted friends or schedule lunch with a family member whom you can share mutual support.

Talk with one of our volunteers at the California Youth Crisis Line.

Our volunteers at the California Youth Crisis Line are available 24-hours-a-day seven-days-a-week via call/text or by online chat by visiting calyouth.org/cycl.  CYCL volunteers are specially trained to handle crisis navigation, emotional management, and to provide coping skills to get youth and families back on track and out of a crisis.

Try not to make any major changes right away.

When you’re grieving or coping with a major loss that isn’t the time for major life decisions. Dealing with loss is one of the most stressful events a person can experience and far from the best time to make serious decisions including Moving to a new home, Throwing out mementos and other reminders, changing jobs, making major changes to your finances, etc.

Join a grief support group in person or online.

Sometimes when coping with loss, we feel like our existing support systems have (or are) falling apart, so another alternative to consider is joining an in-person peer support group or an online one on a social network (like Reddit or Facebook). Although this option isn’t for everyone, there are many people who attend support groups and quickly realize it’s a bad fit and others who find support groups helpful.

Consider professional support.

If your grief feels like too much to bear, it’s always helpful to find a mental health professional with experience in grief counseling. An experienced therapist can help you work through intense emotions and overcome obstacles to your grieving. Remember, the California Youth Crisis Line’s volunteers can also help connect you to professional support and therapy in your immediate area, don’t hesitate to call or text us and let us help you find the resource you need.

Be patient with yourself.

Lastly, be patient with yourself. Everyone processes loss at their own pace.  Listen to your own needs and take as much time as you need to get yourself to a place of peace.

If you need to talk to someone, call or text the California Youth Crisis Line at 800 843 5200.
