The Emergency Family Stabilization Act (Federal Legislation)

This past Friday, August 7, U.S. Representatives John Yarmuth (D-KY), Don Bacon (R-NE), Danny K. Davis (D-IL), and Don Young (R-AK) introduced the bipartisan Emergency Family Stabilization Act, H.R. 7950 (EFSA). This legislation provides flexible funding directly to community-based organizations to meet the needs of children, families, and unaccompanied youth who are experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds may be used for a wide range of housing, health, education, and safety-related activities.

Youth Mental Wellness Guide

In these challenging times, it’s important to maintain the mental health and wellness of our youth. Stories of police brutality, COVID-19 case and mortality increases, and increasing stories of racial and social injustices, takes its toll on our mental health and can cause depression, anxiety, and many other mental health concerns.  The California Youth Crisis Line has put together a Youth Mental Wellness Guide that is comprehensible and actionable for youth.

Call to action from the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors

The following references a notice from the Departments of Health Care Services and Public Health and the Office of the Surgeon General.

With the rise in COVID-19 cases in California and across the United States, there is a growing concern over the epidemic’s immediate and long-term impacts on the mental health of our youth and families.

Social isolation, financial insecurity, and unemployment all drive increases in deaths from suicide, overdose, and illness, disproportionately impacting communities of color. Individuals who have a history of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are particularly at risk. We all have the opportunity to screen, intervene and prevent these events from happening to our State’s youth.

As we move into our fifth month of COVID-19, where many of our youth are still sheltering at home with family or staying isolated, you have the opportunity to screen, intervene and prevent these events.

Accessible Mental Health Resources for Black and LGBTQIA+ youth.

The first half of 2020 has been a wild emotional ride. Starting with the COVID-19 global pandemic causing most of California to shelter in place; Mass country-wide Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality and racism; and the cancellation of LGBTQIA+ Pride events across the country. We are halfway through the year and it is already proving to be a challenging time for youth, especially Black youth and LGBTQIA+ youth.
