New year, new us! It’s January 2021 which means we have another opportunity to set the tone and pace for the rest of the year. A lot of us at the California Youth Crisis Line are making mental health resolutions for 2021, some include consuming more media that can help us understand our mental health or better cope with any mental health ailments that we may experience. Here are a few podcasts and shows that we’re paying attention to for our mental health.
The Mental Illness Happy Hour
A popular podcast hosted by Paul Gilmartin (Stand up comedian, TBS Dinner and a Movie). the Podcast shares stories of people’s experiences living with mental health issues like depression, addiction, OCD, and more. Gilmartin brings humor to his candid weekly conversations hoping to inspire listeners to seek help when needed.
Therapy for Black Girls
A great podcast shedding light on the bias that exists in the practice of therapy. Dr. Joy Harden Bradford’s podcast offers thoughtful conversations about every mental health topic imaginable. Her 2020 episodes are very topical talking about quarantine/covid-related mental health issues and stressors.
The Happiness Lab
Hosted by Yale professor, Dr. Laurie Santos, this podcast offers research-based tips on cultivating good happiness habits. Episodes feature stories of people who are finding their own joy.
Mental
British podcaster, Bobby Temps aims to destigmatize anxiety and depression by holding space for his guests accounts of their own mental health journeys.

Did you know the California Youth Crisis Line records and puts out a regular podcast? Each episode CYCL Program Manager, Bianca Christian, and Volunteer Coordinator, Logan Shideler, talk about topics related to youth, the Crisis Line, and mental health.
Headspace Guide to Meditation
Headspace (the massively popular website and application that helps people experience the benefits of meditation anytime) just released an eight episode Netflix show that helps give viewers the skills needed to pause, breathe, and clear their mind. Each installment provides a great blend of storytelling, education and ends with an amazing ten-minute guided meditation.
Stop, Breathe, & Think Kids
From another wildly popular wellness app (Stop, Breathe & Think) brings a series of mindfulness-themed animated episodes aimed to teach kids mindfulness techniques in an entertaining and fun way. Episodes can help turn screen time from a mindless distraction to an engaging activity that promotes wellness.
