Reducing Stress During COVID-19

We want to remind everyone that stress reduction is important, now more than ever. The California Youth Crisis Line is here for you if you need to talk, de-stress, or get access to resources and services, call or text us 24/7 at (800) 843-5200 or chat with us online at www.calyouth.org/chat.

According to the CDC the people who may respond more strongly to the stress of a crisis include:

  • Older People and people with chronic illnesses who are at higher risk for COVID-19
  • Children and teens.
  • People who are helping with the response to COVID-19, like doctors and other health care providers, or first responders.
  • People who have mental health conditions including problems with substance use.

Youth Empowerment Summit 2020 UPDATE

The Following is a Message from California Coalition for Youth Executive Director, Jevon Wilkes:

Dear Friends,
As a result of the recent COVID-19 public health situation, the California Coalition for Youth’s (CCY) Board of Directors, Executive Director, and Youth Empowerment Summit (YES) Committee have decided not to hold YES as scheduled for March 29-31, 2020. This decision is based on the strong recommendations from the California Department of Public Health and the Governor’s office: California Department of Public Health recommendations.
The health and safety of our supporters, volunteers, staff and partners, many of whom provide essential physical and mental wellness care in our community, is a top priority.

Learn About Our Volunteers 02: Olivia

For those of you who don’t know, my name is Jason and I am a staff member at the California Youth Crisis Line. Twice a month I will be interviewing a different member of our crisis line team to share their story with the world.  Each conversation is unique and is conducted with a real member of our staff and/or volunteer team. Crisis Line Best Practices 02: Reflective Listening, what is it?

Reflective listening is a communication style used by our Crisis Counselors to make sure that they’re paying full attention, and letting youth know that they hear what they’re saying. Our counselors use reflective listening in a few different ways, but they primarily focus on repeating, acknowledging, and summarizing.

Crisis Line Best Practices 01: Crisis Navigation

“What is Crisis Navigation, Is it like Therapy?” is a question we get a lot when we talk to folks about the California Youth Crisis Line. Since we aren’t therapists or clinicians it is not our goal to give advice or tell youth what they should or shouldn’t do, our counselors help callers come to their own conclusions and understand what they’re going through. Counselors first find out whether a youth’s crisis falls under one of two categories, A crisis that needs a solution or A crisis that needs support.

Learn about our Volunteers 01: Sienna

My name is Jason and I am a staff member at the California Youth Crisis Line. Twice a month I will be interviewing volunteers and staff members and share our conversations on the California Youth Crisis Line blog and newsletter. Today, I’ll be sharing a discussion I’ve had with one of our volunteers, Sienna, who’s been with the Crisis Line for a year and a half.

Jason: So Sienna, what attracted you to helping youth in crisis?

Sienna: I’m a psychology major and my psych society club mentioned this opportunity and I was excited that people from my major also volunteer here. I also wanted to get experience in helping people and answering phone calls, so I applied, and I volunteer here now.
